Write-up by Steve Lloyd
35 BUNGS members headed North to Coxmoor Golf Club for the final event of the 2016/17 season. Due to the tee times available to us, as sometimes happens at the last event of the year, we played 18 in the morning and 9 in the afternoon with all 27 holes to count for the Challenge Trophy. After excellent bacon baps,it was onto the heathland course which was a lttle damp in places but in good condition for the time of year and the weather was dry and very mild for the end of October, with one nutcase even playing in shorts.

There were some excellent scores on the day and 56 points was only good enough for 5th place, with Paul Jobbins scoring 40 in the morning and 16 in the afternoon off his handicap of 9. On the same score was Peter White (handicap 16) who pipped Paul into fourth with a better afternoon nine (39 and 17). Two points further ahead, and using 'home field' advantage was Gordon Galloway scoring 38 and 20 off an 8 handicap.

2017 Society Captain Kevin Morris won the previous event at Enville and remained in fine form scoring a whopping 41 points in the morning and 19 in the afternoon for 60 points total off his 2 handicap. Normally that would be enough to win the event but Howard Holliday, plaing off 5, had other ideas scoring a superb 62 points with 42 in the morning and 20 in the afternoon, well played Howard, a cracking day of golf.

As Coxmoor was the final event of the season, the year long competitions were also finalised as follows:

League Cup
Kevin Morris' 2nd place and Paul Jobbins' 5th place were enough to tie Darren Minor at the top of the League Cup standings but it was Kevin who took the title due to having a 1st and 2nd place which beat the best other finished of Darren (finishing second) and Paul (finishing third).

Gross Birdies League
Kevin Morris stood at the top of the table and his five birdies plus an eagle meant he was never going to be catched and won with 18 points. Steve Barkshire finished 6 points further back on 12 in second and in third was Alan Heard on 11.

Nett Birdies League
Steve Barkshire was leading the way and after scoring 11 points at Coxmoor cemented the title this year on 46 points. Peter Meaney was second on 38 points with Steve Lloyd third on 37/

35 BUNGS members fought through heavy traffic and driving rain to Enville Golf Club for the 2017 Captain's Trophy. Thankfully the rain stopped before the morning round and the rest of the day was bright but a bit breezy. The morning 9 holes was played on the Highgate course which had recently been hollow tined and was very wet in places due to the heavy rain, the morning money was won by Captain Kevin Morris, Alan Heard and Steve Barkshire on 36 points, gaining £11 each.

Onto the afternoon round on the Lodge course which was in a much much better condition, not so wet and the greens were excellent, some real subtle slopes that caused many a four putt. Once again on Captain's day Kevin Morris had organised a yellow ball competition. Unbelievably, four groups never got passed the second hole with the remaining groups managing to get the yellow ball round all 18 holes with the winners being Alex Tolley, Ian Ronson and Dave Grubb.

In the individial competition, fifth place went to Gordon Galloway, playing off 8, who scored 33 points. One ahead on 34 were Howard Holliday (5) and Gary Tyler (14) and Gary pipped Howard into third place on countback with a better final two holes.

Second place went to Karl Hughes, playing off 8, scoring 18 on the front nine and 17 on the back nine for a 35 point total. This was a whopping four points behind Kevin Morris who triumphed on his own Captain's day ater shooting a level par gross round for 39 points off his handicap of 3. Kev scored 21 on the front nine, aided by a holes wedge on the fourth for an eagle two. His back nine was far less impressive, scoring a paltry 18 points but his two at the 17th, was his second two of a very impressive round. Well played Kev.

Pairs Championship

18 hole fourball-betterball stableford (9/10 handicap)

Paul Jobbins and Darren Minor, winners of the 2017 Pairs Championship
Paul Jobbins and Darren Minor, winners of the 2017 Pairs Championship

Write-up by Graham Thorpe
Only 25 BUNGS members made it for this year’s Pairs Championship with defending Champions Alex Tolley and Ian Ronson defending their title from last year, at the Robin Hood Golf Club at Solihull.   We were not alone with the Warwickshire County  girls visiting also to contest 36 holes and show the BUNGS members how it was done!

The morning 10 hole practice commenced from the 9th hole away from the young girls to give them space, with seven groups on a bright warm sunny day. The course was tree lined on every hole in very pleasant surroundings.  Jeff Sackett had been drawn with two partners, and his partnership with Tim Thacker was the most successful as they took first place with 23 points just ahead of Shaun Mullaney & Peter Meaney in second place also who both donated their winnings to the Captain’s Charity. With a brief shower for no longer than five minutes the afternoon rounds started earlier than planned before the girls commenced their second 18 holes.

Scoring proved difficult in the afternoon as the wind started to blow but the competition was very close in the final count  Finishing in third place were Peter Meaney and Shaun Mullaney on 38 points.  Runners up also with 38 points were Alan Tolley and Steve Hendy with a better back nine, and taking 1st place with 39 points was Paul Jobbins winning this title for the second time with his partner Darren Minor, his first BUNGS trophy.

To mark the occasion two new claret jugs were presented as trophies, kindly donated by Phil Latham, and the Robin Hood golf club donated two cut glasses engraved for the winners too.

The Captain’s Challenge was finally won and the bounty of £88.50 was shared between Jeff Thacker, Shaun Mullaney and Peter Meaney, well done boys.

Finally as a last reminder I would like some more detail for the Summer Tour write up. Photo’s or short dialogue would be most welcome asap please members.

BUNGS Shield
Luffenham Heath Golf Club
- 4th August 2017
36 hole eclectic stableford (9/10 handicap)

Steve Lloyd, winner of the 2017 BUNGS Shield
Steve Lloyd, winner of the 2017 BUNGS Shield

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
Just 29 members made the lengthy journey to Luffenham Heath in Lincolnshire for this year's BUNGS Shield, to be competed in an eclectic format over 36 holes. It's a shame there was such a small turn out on the day as Luffenham is a wonderful heathland course and we were greeted with a course in superb condition with one word of advice from the professional, "stay out the rough".

The weather was dry with many lengthy sunny spells making for a very pleasant day. There was a strong "2 club" wind particularly during the morning round, so scoring was going to prove tricky.

With less than 30 attendees, prizes only went down to fourth so unfortunately for Bill Hancock, his 39 points meant he was beaten on countback and had to settle for fifth spot, so has to endure a handicap cut but no prize. Beating Bill was Paul Jobbins, playing off 11, scoring 20 on the front nine and 19 on the back nine and it was his better back nine that pipped Bill, putting Paul in fourth.

Also on 39 points was Ian Ronson, playing off 18 and he scored an identical front and back nine to Paul but his better final six holes were what secured third place, Two points ahead on 41 was Paul Herrmann of a handicap of 17, Paul scored 20 on the front nine and 21 on the back nine for second place. A further 2 ahead and winning the event was society secretary Steve Lloyd, playing off 7. Steve scored 22 on the front nine and 21 on the back nine for his 43 point total and to take the BUNGS Shield for the third time (I like this event).

BUNGS Championship & BUNGS Masters

Tim Thacker, winner of the 2017 BUNGS Championship

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
Only 30 players made it to Ladbrook Park in Solihuil for this years BUNGS Championship and BUNGS Masters, which was a real shame as it was a fantastic golf course in fantastic condition playes on a beautiful hot, warm, sunny day.

The morning money was won by the only twoball in the field, Paul Herrmann and John Martin with a very impressive performance and £14.50 each to pocket.

Afternoon scores were in general better that the usual BUNGS scores with 33 points being only good enough for fifth place, this went to Alan Heard, playing off 7 and scoring an excellent 20 points out but just 13 coming home. Beating Alan in fourth on countback was Ian Ronson (18) scoring 19 on the front nine and 14 on the back nine for his 33 points. One ahead in third place was John Haley playing off 20, scoring 18 front nine and 16 back nine for 34 points. Beating John on countback was Peter Meaney (8) scoring a steady 17 points each half.

The winner and taking his first title since 2013 was Tim Thacker, playing off 10. Tim scored 19 on the front nine and 16 on the back nine for a 35 point total and the BUNGS Championship crown for 2017, well played Tim.

Running concurrently with this event was the 2017 BUNGS Masters that had just seven entrants this year. Played over all 28 holes, Alex Tolley finished third on 47 points, and both Ian Ronson and Alan Heard scored 51 but it was Ian who triumphed on countback, well played Ian.

BUNGS Memorial Salver
Kibworth Golf Club
- 26th May 2017
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
31 BUNGS members headed to Kibworth Golf Club for this year's Memorial Salver and were greeted with a beautful hot sunny day and a course in superb condition. There was a stiff breeze that made hitting the small greens a bit tricky but at least ot helped keep us all cool on a sweltering day.

Alan Heard, winner of the 2017 BUNGS Memorial Salver
Alan Heard, winner of the 2017 BUNGS Memorial Salver

The morning money was won by Mike Fox (19), Alan Tolley (19) and John Stamper (22) with a superb 42 points over the nine holes. Alan must've gotten the taste for winning as he even tried to claim a nearest the pin prize in the afternoon, moving the marker to his ball despite it clearly being on the fringe and not on the green. Gary Tyler soon put him right!

Onto the afternoon round and Tim Thacker, handicap 11, had a consistent afternoon scoring 16 on each 9 for a 32 point total, which was matched by Bill Hancock, handicap 16, but it was Bill's better back 6 holes that pipped Tim into the prizes with Bill finising fifth. Also on 32 points was Alex Tolley, playing off 13, who scored 15 and and 17 back so his better back 9 put him in fourth place.

Third place went to society Captain Kevin Morris, as consistent as ever off his handicap of 3, with 16 points on the front nine and 18 on the back for a 34 point total. Also on 34 was Douglas Treacher off 12, scoring just 14 on the front nine but a superb 20 on the back nine to beat Kev into second on countback.

One point ahead, and winning the BUNGS Memorial Salver for the second time, was Alan Heard playing off 8. Alan scored 16 on the front nine and 19 on the back nine for his 35 point total, well played Alan.

Enterprise Cup
Notts (Hollinwell) Golf Club
- 26th April 2017
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
41 BUNGS members arrived to play this season's Enterprise Cup at the superb Notts (Hollinwell) Golf Club, probably the best venue the seociety is visiting during 2017. The course was in pristine condition and the greens were slick, the weather was icy cold when the sun went behind clouds and the sun's warmth was very welcoming when it made its frequent appearances. We even had a few flurries of snow which I think is a first for an April BUNGS event.

The morning money was won by the group of Adam Thompson, Dave Grubb, Mike Fox and John Stamper on 37 points, each pocketing £8.

Just like at Wychwood Park the previous month, scoring proved tricky in the individual event and 32 points was enough for Paul Jobbins to take fifth place off his handicap of 11. Simon Hayward and Ian Ronson also scored 32 but Paul's better back nine pipped them into the final prize position. There were four players one point ahead on 33, so this year's Enterprise Cup was to be decided by countback.

Playing off 11, Darren Minor has a storming start and had amassed 21 points after just 8 holes but a blob on the 9th and just 12 points on the back nine was never going to win any countback head to head, so Darren had to settle for fourth. Des McWilliams (handicap 19) also had a great front nine of 20 points but like Darren struggled on the back nine for just 13 points and finished third.

Craig Vale thought he'd finished on 34 points off his 14 handicap, but a scoring mistake actually meant he only had 33 points (20 out and 13 back) so unfortunately had to settle for second place to eventual winner Steve Hendy. Playing off 6, Steve's card was the opposite of Valey's and Des's with 13 on the front nine but 20 coming home for his 33 point total and yet another BUNGS success. Well Played Steve, we'll have you off scratch before you know it.

Ballesteros Bowl
Wychwood Park Golf Club
- 24th March 2017
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
With the M6 closed between Stafford and Stoke, 41 BUNGS members fought their way through horric traffic, via various detours, to arrive at Wychwood Park to contest the 2017 Ballesteros Bowl.

Mark Johnson, winner of the 2017 Ballesteros Bowl
Mark Johnson, winner of the 2017 Ballesteros Bowl

The weather could not have been kinder to us, bright sunshine and blue skies but the wind still had a chill to it. James Shipman is a member at Wychwood and said we would not find the course playing any easier at this time of year, so was scoring going to be good?

Wychwood Park is a long course with some huge walks between greens and tees, and with the course being so wet in places, perhaps the scores weren't going to be as good as James anticipated.

31 points was enough for fifth place and this went to Karl Hughes, playing off 8, who pipped both Kevin Armitt and Peter Meaney into the prizes with a better back nine. Fourth went to James Shipman, playing off 10, also on 31 points but with a better last six holes than Karl.

One point ahead of James was another Wychwood Park member, Darren Minor who played off 11 and his 32 points was enough for third. On 33 points and in second place was Alan Heard, playing off 9. Alan had a storming fron 9 of 20 points but a lesser 13 on the back nine would cost Alan victory.

Attending his first BUNGS event was Patrick Stevenson and Patrick scored 34 points on his maiden outing which would have been enough to win the event, but under BUNGS rules first time attendees who do not possess a current CONGU handicap are not eligible to win or claim a top five prize, so unfortunately for Patrick he could not claim the trophy.

The winner of the event was Mark Johnson who scored 33 points, the same as Alan Heard, helped with an eagle 2 at the third hole for 5 points, but Mark's better back nine of 16 points was enough for Mark to claim the 2017 Ballesteros Bowl and a handicap cut to 11.3. Well played Mark.

Christmas Cup
Maxstoke Park Golf Club
- 15th December 2016
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
31 BUNGS members arrived at Maxstoke Park for this year's Christmas Cup. Over the years we have witnessed all weather conditions at Maxstoke Park but this time we were greeted with relatively mild conditions and a dry day, which made a pleasant change. The course was in a prerty good condition for December, the greens were very receptive and the tees forward, so it was expected that scoring would be good, and so it proved.

26 of the 31 attendees scored 30 points or more, which must be a first for BUNGS and you needed a score of 36 points to get into the top five prizes. Unfortunately for John Martin and Gary Tyler, their back nine scores meant they had to settle for 7th and 6th respectively. Playing off 16, it was Neil Preston's mammoth 21 points on the back nine that secured with 5th place on countback over John and Gary. One ahead was Phil Latham, playing off 15 who scored 20 on the front nine and 17 on the back nine for a 37 point total and fourth place, Also on 37 was Graham Thorpe off his 22 handicap, who matched Phil's front and back nine tally, but took third place with a better final 6 holes.

Two points ahead was Steven Raji, playing off 19, who had an excellent day scoring an excellent 20 on the front 9 and 19 on the back for a 39 point total. This would normally be enough t win a BUNGS event but Steve Barkshire had other ideas. Defending the Christmas Cup he won this time last year, Steve had a blistering front 9 of 23 points using his handicap of ten to full effect. His back nine only comprised 17 points but his 40 point total was enough to defend his Christmas Cup crown, well played Steve.

As usual, a superb Christmas Meal followed and a short but sweet AGM rounded off the event. We've got a few months off now until we start it all again in March at Wychwood Park, have a great Christmas fellow BUNGS'onians.

The Cliff Thompson Salver
Woodhall Spa
- 19th November 2016
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Adam Thompson, winner of the 2016 Cliff Thompson Salver

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
31 BUNGS members made the journey to The National Golf Centre for the 2016 winter trip. As usual we played a fourball-betterball on the first morning on the Bracken course and the main competition on the Hotchkin course on day two, competing for the Cliff Thompson Salver.

The weather on both days was dry and sunny, albeit very cold, but we couldn't of asked for better weather on a two day trip in November.

With cash prizes available for the top three pairs, third place went to Steve Lloyd and Peter Meaney on 38 points (beating Dr's Shipman and Shaw on countback) with Steve Gross and Kevin Morris in second on 42 points and the bulk of the cash snaffled up by Bobby Ho and Gordon Galloway on a very impressive 44 points.

We were all looked after splendidly by The Inn at Woodhall Spa and nearly everyone was tucked up in bed by 11pm, we know how to party on a Friday night!

Onto the Hotchkin course on Saturday and scoring from nearly everyone was absolutely terrible. I'm not sure why because the course wasnt playing that long, the weather was ideal, but most really struggled and a lot were kicking themselves when they got into the clubhouse and saw the scores that got into the prizes.

Bobby Ho was delighted to take four quid off playing partner Steve Lloyd and was even happier to see his 28 points gave him fifth place, off his handicap of 13. Ahead of Bobby in fourth was his partner from the previous day, Gordon Galloway. Also with 28 points off a handicap of 8, Gordon beat Bobby on countback with a better back nine.

Also on 28 points, but with a better back six holes over Gordon was Steve Barkshire, playing off 10 and one ahead of those three players on 29 points was John Shaw off his handcap of 5. Adam Thompson won the final event of the 2015/16 season last month at Druids Heath and Tommo was at it again at Woodhall Spa. As the trophy we were playing for is named after his late father, Cliff, it was great to see Adam destroy the rest of the field to finish three points clear of anyone else. Playing off a handicap of five, Adam scored 17 points on the front nine and 15 on the back nine for a 32 point total. Must be one of the lowest winning totals ever at a BUNGS event, but he was three clear of everyone else on a very difficuly golf course, so a thoroughly deserved victory to take home your Dad's trophy, well played Tommo.

Unfortunately for Adem he is first victim of the new handicap policy where the winner of an event will be cut a minimum of one full shot, no matter how many points are scored. This means Adam is cut by 1.0 to 4.0 instead of 0.5 to 4.5 under the old system.
