In 1923, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, one of the finest landscape architects of the twentieth century, was commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire to design a new eighteen-hole golf course on his expansive estate. The result was the magnificent Cavendish course, which is as splendid today as it was in the 1920s. A par 65, it is designed upon undulating woodland and dense copses, making it a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Its feature hole is probably the par three fifth, from which you need to hit the green from your elevated tee shot or risk being caught in any of the green's many surrounding traps. Accuracy, concentration and awareness of the wind speed and direction are essential on this hole especially.

Located just outside of the town of Aldridge, near Walsall, is the Druid's Heath Golf Club, home to a spectacular and demanding course. It measures well in advance of 6600 yards and is therefore a good test of your long hitting, it is a course that you need to plot your way around, a feat made no easier by the tree lined undulating fairways. Similarly, there are plenty of well positioned bunkers along with some fast sloping greens that will have you scratching your head wondering the best way to create a good score. A word to the wise - the saying "sure and steady wins the race" is an appropriate motto for playing this course. In other words, take your time, keep your concentration and temper, and a low score could be yours.

The oldest course in Leicestershire is this picturesque nine-hole treat, only a few minutes drive from the M1 motorway. Beautifully maintained and treated, it belies it 114 years, and the traditional, prominent Leicester granite which decorates it, adds a magical touch to the course. The par four fourth is a potential banana-skin so choosing your club carefully is vital. With a water-trap between the tee and the fairway, and a sprawling bunker guarding the approach to the green, a scorecard's respectability can be seriously damaged over these 285 yards. Choose a low wood from the tee and a high iron from the fairway to steer clear of the obvious dangers on this hole.
