“E by gum welcome back to gods own country Yorkshire cithy” as the Bungs returned after a gap of 10 years for this year’s Society Summer Tour.

As is the usual practice everyone assembled at the first Tee for the group photograph but as always BUNGS members alone on tour need constant reminders on dress code. This year the club secretary arrived in the wrong coloured shirt (Steve wrote the code for the Tour!) and Terry (Nutkins) Tomkiss turned up without golf trousers (most embarrassing.)
The captain’s vice had been slow to distribute the cards at breakfast and got his first rollicking of the day.

Steve Harris led the Captain’s team out with the first point from his singles against challenger Peter Meaney.
The Captain as always used his left handed iron to get him out of trouble. The first four ball found the Captain with partner Steve Gross triumphant with a 2 & 1 result.
Vice-Captain with partner John Stamper surrendered the first point to the Challengers team Robert Brown and Jeff Thacker (2 up). “Ok it was a loss Captain!”
Craig Vale and Gary Tyler for the challengers won by one hole.
The Captains team hit back with a 4 & 3 win against Darren Minor and the Challengers Captain (luckless Tim.)
The Challengers John Shaw and Martyn Dodwell won 1 up against the captains team of the long (Shaun Mullaney) and the short (Bobby Ho.)
The Captain’s twosome of Gordon Galloway with partner John Haley won 2 up against David Grubb and Terry (mind my new trousers) Tomkiss.
The Challengers team of Karl Hughes and partner Phil Latham were too strong for the Captain’s pairing of James Shipman winning 4 & 3. They stormed into a lead and were 3 up after only 5 holes, and were even par after 9 holes.
In the final match the Captain’s team of Jamie Moore and Kevin Armitt won 2 &1 against John Martin and John Mansell.
After the first joust the Captains team led the Challengers by a single point. All the matches had been hard foughtt over 13 holes in the morning session. Steve Harris won the singles match by one hole and each team won four of the pairings.

After a light lunch battle recommenced with the Captain’s team straight out of the blocks.
Howard Holliday led the way in the singles winning by 1 hole against Jeff Thacker.
Steve Gross and the Vice won 4 & 3 against Adam Thompson and Craig Vale with some great putting and chipping which disillusioned our opponents.
Alan Heard and Steve Harris won 3 & 2 against Peter Meaney and Robert Brown.
The two Captains were drawn together and unbelievably Captain Greybeard (Boycott) and his partner John Stamper (MR 10%) lost to Tiny Tim and Steve Barkshire 3 & 2.
The Challengers were on fire now and David Grubb with partner Gary Tyler won 2 & 1 and in the next match Darren Minor & Martyn Dodwell won 7 & 6 for the Challengers too.
Kevin Morris & James Shipman steadied the Captains ship with a 4 &2 win against John Shaw and partner Karl Hughes.

After dinner our infamous captain announced a new concept for a Bungs Tour that he would introduce fines to society members who in his eyes had brought the society into disrepute !
First to be fined for inappropriate dress were Steve Lloyd (wrong shirt), and Terry Tomkiss for forgetting his golf trousers.
Phil Latham was the next to receive a fine for failing to put out the nearest the pins flags.
Howard Holliday whilst using his initative by using the Captain’s quiz bit by bit as he completed his round to show the nearest the pins was fined for defacing the Captain’s enterprise.
(You can’t win with this Captain!)

A short drive to the golf course on another fine day saw many society members having putting practice before we commenced.
The morning singles match was won by the Challengers team as Peter Meaney won 6 & 4 against wee Bobby Ho who was left stranded in many bunkers during the round.
The first foursomes match was won by the Captain’s team with Kevin Morris & Jamie Moore triumphant with a 3 &1 win against Gary Tyler and Steve Barkshire.
The Captain’s team were also winners in the second match as Steve Lloyd and partner Gordon Galloway won 3 & 1 against John Martin and Robert Brown.
A resounding win of 6 &4 for the Challengers team of John Shaw and Darren Minor beating James Shipman and Mark Johnson which had never been in doubt.
Captain greybeard and his partner John Haley earned the first half in two days of competition against Terry (mind my new trousers) Tomkiss and John Mansell.
Another close match saw the Captain’s pairing of Howard Holliday and Shaun Mullaney defeat Karl Hughes and Martyn Dodwell 1 up.
A shock result in the next match as Kevin Armitt lost a match play, for the first time on tour with his partner John Stamper 2 & 1 against Phil Latham and Craig Vale.
Tiny Tim and partner Adam Thompson won easily against Steve Gross and Vice 5 & 4 for the Challengers team.
Another resounding victory for the Captain’s team Steve Harris and Alan Heard easy winners 7 & 6 against David Grubb and Jeff Thacker closed the morning matches.
Honours even after the morning matches. 4.5 points each.
A very pleasant lunch on the terrace with soup and a wide selection of very nice sandwiches in the afternoon sunshine before we recommenced.
Shaun Mullaney was instructed to remove himself from the members changing room by a Ganton member and several society members were forbidden to watch the world cup match as it was only on in the members TV lounge. Nice sandwiches but you have to know your place here at Ganton!

Vice and Kevin Armitt had a close match with Adam Thompson and Phil Latham, with a triumphant 2 & 1 win. Phil was preoccupied however in this match as he was completing a survey on bunkers, which were the deepest and most difficult to get out of !
Shaun Mullaney & Steve Harris had a resounding win of 6 & 5 against Robert Brown and David Grubb. Challengers Captain Tiny Tim with partner Karl Hughes beat Steve Gross and John Stamper 4 & 3 and in the final match the Captain’s pairing of Alan heard and Bobby Ho won 3 & 1 against John Mansell and Jeff Thacker.

Following on from the previous dinner fines were handed out again in the evening. Fashion guru John Stamper wore his shirt inside out on the morning round, and Karl Hughes was fined for letting a loose trolley go from a tee which narrowly missed assassinating the Captain. (Hard luck Karl.) Martyn Dodwell also got fined because it was his turn! (I can’t remember why)

Early breakfast and we journeyed to Leeds to play at Sand Moor Golf Club. The weather was glorious blue skys all the way. The Challengers had to make a good start this morning to eat into the Captain’s team lead of 6 points.
First away was Gordon Galloway who was triumphant 2 &1 against Steve Barkshire.
The two Captain’s and the two Vice’s were paired together against each other. The Captain’s team were comfortable in both matches but then the Thackers hit back and as we stood on the 18th Tee both matches were all square. But Captain Grey beard and his bungling vice captain both won the 18th hole to record 2 further points.
With a nine point lead in the match for the Captain’s team they were almost over the line but not quite.
Kevin Morris won 3 & 1 against John Shaw, another point for the Captain’s team (10 point lead).
Now the Challengers suddenly started to produce the goods. Peter Meaney beat Kevin Armitt 3 & 1. Phil Latham beat Shaun Mullaney 3 & 2, and Karl Hughes beat Steve Lloyd 2 & 1. Martin Dodwell finished 2 up against Mark Johnson and now the lead was only 6 points.with 9 results to come.
The Captain disappeared at this point obviously out “bollicking his remaining troops” from a buggy.
His encouragement (threats) obviously paid off as the Captain’s men rallied. James Shipman beat John Martin 2 & 1; Howard Holliday beat Darren Minor 4 &3 and John Stamper (Mr 10%) had his greatest tour result beating Adam Thompson 5 & 4.
Steve Harris beat John Mansell 6&5, Jamie Moore beat David Grubb 6 & 4, Alan Heard beat Gary Tyler 3 & 1 and Bobby Ho halved with Craig Vale. The final two singles resulted in one win each. John Haley beat Terry (mind my new trousers) Tomkiss 3 & 2 and Robert Brown won the final match for the Challengers against Steve Gross 2 up.
Four players have 100% records winning 5 from 5:
Steve Harris; Alan Heard; Gordon Galloway ; Jamie
Moore
Martyn Dodwell had the best record winning 4 from 5 matches
Finally from the most enjoyable tour I have been on and how ironic that the last fine of this tour was going to Captain Grey beard who was caught in a speed camara trap on the A64 from Scarborough to Leeds as he zoomed past us all on the duel carriageway in the morning, perhaps my wishes have come true and someone out there protects vice captains !
