held their noses as they drove past The Hawthorns to get to
Sandwell Park Golf Club for the final event of the 2021/22
season. It was a wet and miserable day,but could have been
much worse as the forecast before was pretty atrocious.
The course wasn't in the best of condition, it was very wet in places and the tees looked like it was deepest winter rather than early autumn. The greens however were good and fast, making putting tricky for most.
All 27 holes count in the final event of the season and scoring wasn't particularly good (that's an understatement). 46 points was enough to get into the prizes and fourth place went to Adam Thompson playing off 5 scoring 14 points in the morning 9 holes and 32 points in the afternoon. Also on 46 was Karl Hughes off a handicap of 7. Karl scored 17 in the morning and in the afternoon but his better back nine in the afternoon round pipped Tommo into third.
In second was Kevin Morris playing off one. Kev had a very consistent day scoring 16 in the morning and 33 in the afternoon for his 49 point total and this was enough to win the League Cup. The winner and taking the Challenge Trophy title for the second time (first was in 2009) was John Haley. Playing off 21, John Sscored 16 in the morning and followed that up with 35 in the afternoon (19 of those on the back nine) for his 51 point total. Well played John.

Captain's Trophy

arrived at Druids Heath Golf Club in Aldridge on a bright
sunny day and the weather stayed good throughout the day.
The money for the morning team competition was won by Steve Lloyd, Bobby Ho & Henry Hau on 37 points and so it was onto the afternoon competition,which also had an additional 'yellow ball' competition, where the ball was rotated around each member of the group with the yellow ball holder scoring double points on that hole. The prizes for that competition was won by the Captain himself Phil Latham, along with his playing partners Steve Harris and John Shaw. It's ironic that John complained at lunchtime that he wouldn't be able to play with the Srixon yellow ball he'd been given becasue it was too hard, he then proceeded to birdie five of the six holes where he used the yellow ball!
Onto the main competition for the Captain's Trophy and in fourth was Bobby Ho scoring 35 off a handicap of 13 and also on 35 in third was Darren Penny playing off 16. In second place playing off two, John Shaw made birdie on six of the holes, scoring 21 on the front nine and 16 on the back nine for 37 points and a commanding lead in the Gross Birdies League competition with just one event to go.
Graham Thorpe hadn't won an event for 11 years until he won the Pairs Championship (with Steve Gross) at the previous event, then like buses, two come along together. Playing off 23, Graham scored 18 on the front nine and 19 on the back nine to pip John to the title with a better back nine. Well played Graham, the handicap secretary will be looking at you closely no doubt.

Cavendish Golf Club - 26th August 2022

plus one guest headed north to the wonderful Cavendish Golf
Club for this years Pairs Championship. The weather was a
mix of overcast and sunshine and was nice and warm when the
sun did shine. The course was in good condition and far more
lush than most people had been used to on their home courses
over he past month of drought. As always with Cavendish, the
greens were very tricky, hardly a straight putt on the
course.
The morning scoring was pretty good and the money was taken by Jeff Sackett and Steve Hendy in second place on 26 points and one point ahead in first were Douglas Treacher and Adrian Marchant with a fantasic 27 points.
After a great lunch it was onto the course for the main trophy.Scoring wasn't so brilliant in the afternoon with 34 points being enough to get into the prizes. Gary Mogford and his guest Paul Preslin scored 34 but had to settle for fourth on countback. Pipping Gary and Paul intonthe prizes in third place were Jeff Sackett (21) and Steve Hendy (5) who continued their good form from the morning with 34 points.
Two points ahead in second place were Tim Thacker off 12 and Ian Ronson off 16. They had a fine front nine of 21 points but after 'blobbing' the tenth they had to settle for just 15 on the back nine and a 36 point total.
A further two points clear were Steve Gross (22) and Graham Thorpe (25). With a abundance of shots toplay with, both players dovetailed nicely and used their shots well, scoring 20 on the front nine and 18 on the back nine for their 38 point total and the Pairs Championship trophies, well played chaps.

BUNGS Shield
Kirby Muxloe Golf Club - 23rd June 2022

their may to Kirby Muxloe via various routes for the 2022
eclectic competition, The BUNGS Shield.
The course was in a really good condition and the greens had plenty of subtle (and not so subtle) breaks and was a good test.
The weather started sunny and warm but as the day progressed the clouds moved in and it looked like we were in for a thunder storm at one point but luckily it was just a light shower, one of several during the day.
There was some decent scoring with four players on 37 points, unfortunately for Howard Holliday and Mark Johnson, they left empty handed (not strictly true for Howard who bagged a nearest the pin and the longest drive). Peter Meaney was the 'best of the rest' in the 1-18 handicap category (Jeff Sackett took the 19-28 category with 36 points), which meant that with a better back nine,Craig Vale took fourth place with his 37 points off a handicap of 13.
One point better on 38, playing off 10, was Steve Barkshire in third and with a better back six holes, Shaun Mullaney (off 6) pipped Steve into second place.
The winner, taking his second win in the last three events was Steve Gibbons. Playing off 21 (with 16 shots) Steve scored 40 points, two shots clear of second and took the BUNGS Shield and a nice handicap cut before the Anglesey tour. Well played Steve.

BUNGS Masters

A busy day,
for The Bungs members with three competitions to play for at
the Walsall club, one of our favourite venues.
The Bungs Masters was also being played over 27 holes today, and the morning 9 hole competition took place as well.
The team of Bobby Ho, Henry Hau and Darren Penny took the prize with 38 points for a near flawless display and were smugly sat in the club house eating their delicious sandwiches as the remaining field could get nowhere near. A good morning for Bobby too as he was leading the Masters competition with 21 points.
The afternoon although breezy saw the introduction of the sun which was nice and warm. The afternoon competition was a close contest. Finishing in fourth place was Ian Ronson with 34 points off a handicap of 16 losing on count back to James Shipman in third place with 34 points off a handicap of 11. Runner up it was that man again Bobby Ho with 34 points off a handicap of 14, (winner of the Masters with 55 pts from 27 holes).
The winner and one of his partners was Henry Hau with 35 pts from a handicap of 23. Having been close in recent events it was Henrys first BUNGS success, well done Henry shame about the Handicap cut.
Adam Thompson won the 1-18 handicap prize with 32 pts and Steve Gibbons won the most coverted prize of 19th-28 handicap with 24 points.
The Captain's Par 3 Challenge rolled onto the next event with no group close.

A better day
greeted us for the second BUNGS event of 2022.
Having negotiated the M42 traffic jams, 26 members turned up for the afternoon challenge. The morning competition was a closely run thing but the cream as always came to the top with a score of 38 points from 9 holes, Captain Phil Latham led his team of Darren Penny, Steve Harris and Graham Thorpe to a deserved number one podium finish!
We started early for the afternoon session, which again was closely contested over some tricky greens as the sun tried to break out and warm us up. In fourth place was Darren Penny off a handicap of 16 scored 32 points . In third place was Ian Ronson off a handicap of 18, with 35 points. Runner up was Kevin Morris also on 35 points, off a handicap of 2, he also had the longest drive, nearest the pin in 2 and a 2 on hole number 11 - coupons galore. Steve, you will need to replenish the Pro V1's again !
The winner on 31 points and his second BUNGS success, playing off a handicap of 23 was Steve Gibbons with 37 points. Well done Steve get that handicap down.
Craig Vale won the 1-18 handicap prize with 31 pts and Mike Fox won the most coverted prize of 19th-28 handicap with 22 points.
The Captain's Par 3 Challenge rolled onto the next event with an almost impossible green selection here today.
There were three 2's all on the 11th green, Kevin Morris , Peter Meaney and Andy Smith took the money. Well done chaps.

On a very cold
morning at 2 degrees, I chipped the ice off my windscreen to
make my way to Worksop Golf Club.
The 60 minute journey saw a low turnout of 21 members turn up for the first event in 2022. The Temperature had now risen to 3 degrees after bacon sandwiches and coffee and with several layers on to combat the sneaky wind the morning tournament commenced. The winning team, finishing with 32 points, were Howard Holliday, Steve Gibbons and John Martin.
The main talking point over lunch was the depth of sand in the bunkers, and how to get out of the manufactured sand pits. In particular Karl Hughes had never seen so much sand ever at Trentham (where he is a member), since he had visited Skegness on holiday.
The afternoon temperature had sneaked up to just below 10 degrees, and a low scoring but tight competition took place with five members finishing on 31 points.
In fourth place was Paul Jobbins off a handicap of 8 scored 31 pts lost on the back nine. In third place was our new Captain Phil Latham off a handicap of 13 lost out on the back 6.
Runner up was Tim Thacker who had nearly given up on himself at one point, off a handicap of 12 lost out on the back 3 holes.
The winner on 31 points and his second BUNGS success, playing off a handicap of 15 was Steve Dewey. Kevin Morris won the 1-18 handicap prize with 31 pts and Steve Gibbons won the 19th-28 handicap prize with 23 points.
As a final footnote the greens were very good and quite slick as well as tricky and the sandpits were unbelievable !

Christmas Cup
Maxstoke Park Golf Club - 9th December 2021

arrived at Maxstoke Park Golf Club in Coleshill on a bright
but chilly December morning to find the course in a great
condition for the time of year,probably the best it's been
on any of our December visits.
In general scoring was pretty steady from most people. Fifth place went to Adam Thompson playing off 5 and one point ahead in fourth place,playing off 25 was Graham Thorpe. Also on 35 was last season's League Cup winner John Shaw playing off 2. John pipped Graham into third place with a better back nine of 18 points.
Second place went to Steve Raji who had a cracking front nine of 20 points but just 16 on the back nine for his 36 point total,playing off 16.
Last time out at Woodhall Spa, the event was won by Jamie Moore and this time it was his recently reconciled 'wife' Adrian Marchant who took the honours this time. Playing off 12, Adrian scored 20 on the front nine and followed that up with 19 on the back nine for a 39 point total and the Christmas Cup trophy. Well played Marcho.

The Cliff Thompson Salver
Woodhall Spa (Hotchkin Course) - 13th November 2021

their way North to Woodhall Spa for the first event of the
2021/22 season. After a slightly chaotic breakfast it was
onto the Bracken course for the first days
fourball-betterballs. The weather was bright and chilly but
really good for November, there were even some nutters in
just t-shirts! The money for the top three pairs went to
Steve Gross and Craig Vale in third on 39 points, Jason
Cooper and James Shipman in second also with 39 points
(better back six holes) and the winners were Mike Fox and
John Shaw on 43 points.
After several drinks at the golf club, everyone headed to the hotel for a few more drinks and then a wondrful meal. It was then off to the bar again where some had a game of poker and others got acquainted with some of the locals over a game of pool. It didn't take Jamie long to make friends, I'm sure calling someone a speccy c*nt shows the height of friendship in Woodhall Spa. To be fair, it's a bloody good description of Jamie!
Saturday morning was another dry day and it was onto the superb Hotchkin course to compete for the Cliff Thompson Salver. At the top of leaderboard it was very tight, 32 points was enough to be in the prizes, scored by both Jason Cooper (handicap 17) and Adrian Marchant (12). Marcho pipped Jason into fourth on countback, with Jason having to settle for fifth. One point ahead was Chris Dewes scoring 33 off a handicap of 4 finishing in third. After triumphing in the final of the matchplay competition, Phil Latham continued his good form scoring 34 points off a handicap of 14 and that was good enough for second place. The winner, also on 34 points but with a better back nine was speccy c*nt himself,Jamie Moore. Playing off 14, Jamie scored 15 on the front nine and a superb 19 on the back nine for his total and first BUNGS victory in over ten years, well played Jamie.
