Our results for the 2014/2015 season were as follows

(most recent event first):

Challenge Trophy
Blackwell Golf Club
- 21st October 2015
27 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
32 society members made their way to Blackwell Golf club in Bromsgrove, many of them getting stuck in horrendous traffic meaning it took some over 3hours to get there. The groups were hastily rearranged to compensate and it was ono the first tee for the morning 9 holes, with all 27 holes to be counting towards players overall totals.

Blackwell is one of the most prestigous courses in The Midlands and is always in great condition, it's a shame there was such a lot of overnight rain as the course was a little soggier than normal. There was some rain during the morning round but it remained dry for the afternoon round.

Fifth on the day was current Captain Mark Johnson off his handicap of 13. Mark scored 18 in the morning and 33 in the afternoon for a 51 point total. Also on 51 was the ever steady Howard Holliday off his handicap of 5. Howard scored 19 in the morning and 32 in the afternoon and pipped mark into fourth with a better back nine.

Third went to Neil Preston playing off 16. Neil had a poor morning with just 14 points but a tremendous afternoon of 39 points for a 53 point total and third place. A further two points ahead on 55 points was Peter Meaney off 10. Pete had an excellent morning of 21 points but had to settle for 32 in the afternoon.

Craig Vale lives just around the corner from Blackwell and used local knowledge to good effect scoring 20 in the morning and 37 in the afternoon for a 57 point total, off his soon to be reduced handicap of 16 - well played Craig.

As this was the last event of the 2014/15 season, the year long competitions were also decided at Blackwell.

The League Cup was won by Peter Meaney whose second place was enough to overtake long time leader Kevin Morris who had to settle for second, with Howard Holliday finishing in third.

As consolation for missing out on the League Cup, Kevin Morris took the Gross Birdies League title with 13 birdies, Howard Holliday finished in second on 11 and Steve Lloyd third on 10.

The Nett Birdies League went to Alex Tolley on 41 points with Peter Meaney in second on 39 and Gary Tyler third on 37.

Captain's Trophy
Sandwell Park Golf Club
- 24th September 2015
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Graham Thorpe
Only 23 BUNGS members made it for the Captains day at Sandwell Park  a very low turnout the smallest field of players for some time .  With the absence of Society Secretary Steve Lloyd  the committee members again ran the day without too much aggravation.

The morning 9 hole practice commenced at 10-00 am with eight groups on a bright warm sunny day . Many members had never played at this course which had produced some pretty slick greens which at times were difficult to read. Several of the tee boxes were situated with average carries but narrow entrances to the fairways; a very testing day was ahead of us!  The winners playing off ¾ Handicap were John Haley, Alex Tolley ,Lloyd Johnson and Peter Meaney with a score of 38 points.  The team of Gary Tyler, Alan Tolley and Karl Hughes had 32 points after 8 holes and then disqualified themselves by playing the 18th hole instead of the 9th.  There was some debate over lunch that they should be disqualified for the afternoon as well as they were seeking an advantage by practicing on the 18th.  But justice prevailed as all three players did not threaten the final placings!

Scoring well proved difficult in the afternoon as the wind started to blow against us on many holes on the back nine.  In  4th place was Alex Tolley with 31 points , Steve Barkshire taking 3rd place for the second event in a row with 34 points. Finishing runner up with 36 points was Peter Meaney and taking 1st place with 37  points was Paul Jobbins winning his third title success . Well done Paul.

After a splendid meal in the clubhouse the Captain Mark stood up to present the prizes and his generosity knew no bounds as everyone received a prize of liquid refreshment from his vast cellar of wine, a majestic offer!

No group won the Captain’s Challenge so again it rolls over.

Nobody beat the pro on the par 3, 12th hole so the charity benefits on the day.

Thanks to Mark and the committee for such a great day, those who stayed away missed a treat.!

BUNGS Shield
Ingestre Park Golf Club
- 27th August 2015
36 hole 'eclectic' stableford (3/4 handicap)

Write-up by Graham Thorpe
30 BUNGS members and 1 guest headed to Ingestre Park for the annual eclectic tournament over 36 holes.  With the absence of Society Secretary Steve Lloyd on the day several committee members gathered around the professional shop waiting for the pro to arrive prior to 8.00 am.

The first three ball teed off at 9.00 on a bright warm sunny morning at this picturesque course which was in great condition with Tim Thacker yet again sporting some nifty trousers under his usual fleece. Some of the members not to be named thought they were his pyjama bottoms though!

The competition was close with 5th place going to John Haley with 37 points leading a pack of  four players,4th place went to Howard Holliday who had been the clubhouse leader for some time with 38 points. However the leading players came in late with Steve Barkshire taking 3rd place with a better back nine to Howard also on 38 points. Finishing runner up with 39 points was Gary Tyler and taking 1st place with 41 points was Bobby Ho winning the Shield for the second time and recording his 7th Bungs trophy success, well done.

After a splendid meal in the clubhouse and a short prize giving given by Alan Tolley all members toasted Steve for a rapid recovery and hoped to see him soon on the forthcoming golf days.

Pairs Championship
Swindon Golf Club
- 31st July 2015
18 hole fourball-betterball stableford (3/4 handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
29 BUNGS members and 2 guests headed to Swindon Golf Club in Dudley for the 2015 Pairs Championship. It was a lovely dry sunny day with a touch of breeze and the course was in a good condition. The tight fairways and some really tricky undulating greens meant scoring was difficult.

The morning money was won by Phil Latham and Ivan Wozniak who trousered a tenner each with their 20 points and second spot and a crisp £5 note went to Howard Holliday and Alan Tolley on 19 points.

Onto the afternoon round and 38 points was enough for Jamie Moore (17) and James Shipman (10) to gake third place. Three points ahead were Dennis Childs (15) and Peter Meaney (12) on 41 points in second place and the 2015 Pairs Championship was won by Howard Holliday (6) and Alan Tolley (19) on 42 points. Alan has previously come second on no less than eight occasons so it was great to see him secure his maiden BUNGS victory, well played Howard and Alan.

BUNGS Championship & BUNGS Masters
Stapleford Park Golf Club
- 11th June 2015
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
33 players made their way to Stapleford Park, just outside Melton Mowbray, for this year's BUNGS Championship and BUNGS Masters. The weather was good and shoty sleeves and shorts were on show for the first time this season. As far as hotel golf courses go, Stapleford Park is a cracker with very much a 'links' feel to the course. It was good condition and the greens were superb, fast and undulating.

The morning team money was taken by Jeff Sackett, Peter Meaney and Steve Lloyd after all three players had great knocks for a 44 point total.

After sandwiches and chips for lunch (with some having more sandwiches that others), it was back onto the course for the main event. Scoring wasn't too bad by most people and 34 points was needed to get into the prizes. Fifth place was taken by Neil White, playing off 10, for his 34 point total. One point ahead on 35 points were Adrian Marchant (15) and Steve Barkshire (13) in fourth and third respectively.

Kevin Moris, winner of the 2015 BUNGS Masters
Kevin Moris, winner of the 2015 BUNGS Masters

Another point ahead, and in the prizes again, was Kevin Morris in second place scoring 36 points off a handicap of three. Taking his maiden BUNGS victory was Steve Harris, playing off a handicap of 10. Steve hadn't picked up a club since the BUNGS event at Sherwood Forest, but this didn't stop him having his best BUNGS score ever and his 37 points was enough to take the BUNGS Championship title, well played Steve.

Running alongside the BUNGS Championship was the BUNGS Masters, where all 27 holes counted towards the score. After the morning 9 holes, most people were still in with a shout, even though Peter Meaney was clubhouse leader on 21 points. Peter's game deserted him in the afternoon however and it was Kevin Morris' 36 points in the afternoon added to his 17 from the morning that took the title with a 53 point total, good work Kev. BUNGS Memorial Salver
Atherstone Golf Club
- 15th May 2015
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
31 players arrived at Atherstone despite many sat nav's trying to send people to a local housing estate. To say Atherstone is a but quirky would be an understatement, it has no pro shop and more blind holes than when Stevie Wonder first stepped onto the links. I don't think many of us had ever played a course with as many undulations (try playing at Welshpool fellas) so the course was a bit of a 'marmite'. Some loved it, some absolutely hated it. It was certainly a challenge to golfing accuracy and stamina!

The course was in a pretty decent condition, the greens could have been a little better but weren't too bad at all. The weather was kind, it remained dry and the sun appeared on more than a few occasions.

The morning three-balls for the money saw two groups score 43 points and it was Jamie Moore, Dennis Childs and John Evans who triumphed with a better back six holes to trouser £10 each.

After lunch it was back onto the course and a winning score in excess of 40 points was predicted due to the course being very short. In usual BUNGS tradition however, most people really struggled and 35 points was good enough to get you into the prizes.

Fifth place went to John Evans who continued his fine play from the morning. Plaing off 20, John scored a huge 21 on the front nine but faltered on the lomger and more difficult back nine with just 14 points and a 35 point total. Playing off 12, Doug Treacher pipped John into fourth with a better back nine after scoring 19 on the front and 16 on the back nine. Alan Heard was one of only a few players who scored better on the back nine than the front nine and it was tis that meant he finished ahead of both John and Doug on countback in third place. Alan played off 8 and scored 17 out and 18 back.

After winning last time out at Beau Desert, Steve Lloyd continued his fine form and stood on the 16th tee just 2 over par and thoughts turned to back-to-back wins. A three putt on 16 followed by a disastrous 7 and a blob on 17 put paid to those thoughts however. Despute a birdie 3 at the last, Steve thought any chance of a win had gone with his 36 points, 19 on the front nine and 17 back nine off a handicap of 5.

Steve was clubhouse leader for a very long time however and most thought his score wouldn't be beaten. That was until some spoilsport from across the pond came to take the crown. Playing off 20, Jeff Sackett scored 20 points on the front nine and 17 on the back nine and his 37 point total was enough to secure his second BUNGS title by one point. Well played Jeff, thoroughly deserved.

The Enterprise Cup
Beau Desert Golf Club
- 15th April 2015
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
36 players headed to Beau Desert, one of the finest golf courses in The Midlands, for the 2015 Enterprise Cup.The weather was sunny and dry with a bit of a breeze and the course was in superb condition for the time of year. The greens had been top dressed a couple of days prior to our visit, but this did not make much of a difference to the putting surfaces. I'm fairly certain they would have been the quickest greens that any BUNGS member had played on during 2015.

The closure of the M6 meant a few players were late arriving so a bit of a re-jig of the groupings had to take place, but everyone did arrive on time for the morning 11 holes. The money was won by Tim Thacker, Bobby Ho and Kevin Morris with 47 points.

After lunch it was back onto the course for the main competition. Scoring on the day was bad, even by BUNGS standards, with the pace and slopes on the greens taking their toll on most players.

30 points was good enough for Phil Latham to be in the prizes in 5th place off his handicap of 17. Doug Treacher also scored 30, but was pipped into the final prize place thanks to Phil's better back nine. Fourth went to Adam Thompson, playing off 6, who scored a massive 21 on the front nine bit could only follow this up with a paltry 10 on the back nine for a 31 point total.

Playing the 18th, I'm fairly certain John Shaw had no inclination that he might have a chance of a prize but his eagle 3 for 4 points at the last boosted John's score to 32 points (16 on each nine) off his handicap of 4 and that was enough for third place. One point ahead of John was Tim Thacker off his handicap of 10 who had a very steady day with 16 on the front nine and 17 on the back nine in second place.

Havng not won an individial BUNGS event since 2003, society secretary Steve Lloyd finally won an event in October 2014 and he followed this with his second win in six months with a demolition of the field at Beau Desert. Playing off 6, Steve scored 21 points on the front nine and 17 on the back nine for a 37 point total, 4 points clear of anyone else. He complemented this with 2 x 2's and a nearest the pin at the 7th. Steve's group (with John Shaw and Alex Tolley) all hit the green at the Captain's Challenge hole (the 7th) for a share of he prize pot with the other group to also succeed (Martyn Dodwell, Peter White & Steve Barkshire). Steve's dominant win did have a downside for him, a handicap cut of 1.0 taking him down to 4.8 (is he the only BUNGS member now playing off exactly half his CONGU handicap?)

The Ballesteros Bowl
Sherwood Forest Golf Club
- 18th March 2015
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
41 BUNGS members headed North to Sherwood Forest Golf club in Mansfield for the first event of 2015. Sherwood Forest is a magnificent championship undulating heathland course and it certainly didn't disappoint. Considering it was March, the course was in magnificent condition and the weather matched the quality of the course. Although it was cold, it remained dry and when the sun came out, it was very pleasant indeed.

After coffee and bacon sandwiches everyone headed to the first tee for 2015 Captain Mark Johnson's drive-in. 72 guesses were made as to how far Mark would hit the ball and he made a good job. His drive may not have been the longest (it was uphill) but he made a great connection on the ball and it finished just a yard off the right of the fairway, 176 yards from the tee. This pleased Dennis Childs who had guessed exactly 176 yards and collected £36, with the remaining £36 going to the Teenage Cancer Trust Charity.

Peter Meaney, winner of the 2015 Ballesteros Bowl
Peter Meaney, winner of the 2015 Ballesteros Bowl

As usual, scoring was a mixed-bag with some great and some not so great. Neil Preston had a day to forget with a run of six blobs on the front nine and another run of four blobs on the back nine, but had the consolation of a two at the 10th, lets keep that form going for our matchplay knockout game please Neil.

Captain Mark Johnson has this year re-introduced the Captain's Par 3 challenge where all three members need to hit the green on a designated par three to take a share of the prize. Playing predominately in fourballs at Sherwood, the challenge would be won if three of the four players hit the green at the 10th. Some groups came close but none managed it, so the money will be rolled-over to Beau Desert.

Onto the prize winners and 35 points was a popular score with Kevin Morris again finishing in the prizes taking fifth place on countback ahead of John Shaw (6th) and Bill Hancock (7th). Playing off 3, Kev had an 'average' front nine of just 15 points but kcocked it round the back nine in level par for 20 points and his 35 point total. Also on 35 was Phil Latham, playing off 17. Phil only managed to score 14 on the front nine but racked-up an impressive 21 points on the back nine to beat Kev into fourth place on countback.

One point ahead was Dave Jones off a handicap of 19. Dave was another player who struggled on the front nine scoring just 15 but, like Phil, he scored a superb 21 on the back nine for a 36 point total. Two points clear of Dave was Steven Raji, playing off 18. Steve had a better front nine and scored 21 but only managed 17 on the back nine for his 38 point total.

Also on 38, and beating Steven to the victory on countback was Peter Meaney. Pete has never previously won a BUNGS event and, I believe, has come second on no less than six different occasions, so it was great to see him gain his first BUNGS title. Playing off 13, Pete only managed to score 16 on the front nine but had an excellent back nine of 22 points for his 38 point total and the victory - well played Pete.

The Christmas Cup
Maxstoke Park Golf Club
- 11th December 2014
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
38 BUNGS members headed to Maxstoke Park for this year's Christmas Cup. We have played Maxstome in conditins for akin to Antarctica but this year, although it was cold there was no frost, ice or snow so conditions were pretty good. There had been a huge amount of overnight rain so the course was wet in places but it remained extremely playable. There was a bit of a breeze which made it feel a touch colder than it actually was, but everyone was wrapped in many layers and wooly hats to keep warm.

After bacon rolls and coffee, it was onto the course to compete for The Christmas Cup. Before we get onto the top five finishers, a mention has got to be given to Jeff Sackett who made a hole in one at the tricky second hole. This was the fourth 'ace' in BUNGS history and the second of Jeff's golfing 'career'. Everyone enjoyed a drink in the clubhouse afterwards - well done Jeff and welcome to the BUNGS hole in one club.

With a couple of exceptions, scoring was pretty steady this year and it took a score of 34 points to get into the top five. Ian Talboys, playing off 10, took fifth with that score, beating Steve Lloyd on countback. Wayne Conlon did well as last year's Maxstoke Park event and it looked like he was going to continue enjoying the course after making a birdie at the first (with a shot) for four points. His good play continued on rhe front nine with 20 points off his handicap of 21. He stuttered on the back nine however with just 15 points for a 35 point total and fourth place.

In third place and also on 35 points was John Martin who had a much steadier round of 18 on the front nine and 17 on the back nine off his handicap of 17. Second place on 36 points was Brian Keates off a handicap of 25. Brian scored 19 on the front nine and 17 on the back nine for his first prize finish for some time. This is certainly not something that can be said about the winner. He's only been a member for just over a year, but Kevin Morris has finished in the prize places on six occasions and finished second on two of these. He finally took his maiden BUNGS victory at Maxstoke. Playing off a handicap of 4, Kev had a real steady round with 18 on the front nine and 20 points on the back nine (helped by birdie three's at both the 17th and 18th) for an excellent 38 point total. Well played Kev.

After an excellent Christmas meal and prize giving, Alan Tolley did his charity auction (which raised £265) and a quick summary of his year and the amount raised, which can be seen on his Captain's Page. A quick AGM was held afterwards where Alan passed on the Captain's baton to 2015 Captain Mark Johnson. Mark gave a few words about his chosen charity for 2015, The Teenage Cancer Trust. To assist Mark, Neil White was voted in as Vice Captain for 2015 (and Captain 2016).

Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone!

The Cliff Thompson Salver
Woodhall Spa (Hotchkin Course)
- 15th November 2014
18 hole stableford (full handicap)

Write-up by Steve Lloyd
36 BUNGS members were signed-up to attend the 2014 winter trip to Woodhall Spa. Many made the journey the night before, but most set off from home in dry conditions, with the weather steadily deteriorating the closer they got to the golf course. By the time most had arrived it wasn't just raining, it was RAINING! So heavy was the rain, the gutters and downpipes of the Woodhall Spa clubhouse couldn't cope at times. After an excellent full english breakfast, the decision for most was whether to play or not. With the rain due to ease in the early afternoon, the majority opted to play but there were around a dozen 'fair weather' players who decided to remain in the warmth of the clubhouse.

So, waterproofs were donned and it was off to the first tee with the rain still hammering down. Many players were concerned about whether the Bracken course would be open/playable after the massive amount of rain that had fallen. They needn't have worried though as the course was in superb condition considering. I think we only saw one or two greens where casual water relief had to be taken on a small patch, the others drained superbly. The main problem was some flooding on the fairways, but this was only to be expected. In fact, the rain was so atrocious in the morning, it really justifies the reasoning to visit a place like Woodhall Spa as 95% of the courses in the UK would have been closed after that sort of deluge. The weather report was spot-on as the rain stopped by the time the first group had reached the halfway house, and it remained dry for the rest of the round - giving us chance to dry off our clubs at least. Even the fairweather 'nancy's' appeared for a cheeky 9 hole practice once the rain stopped.

Mr Sandman, bring me a dream!
Mr Sandman, bring me a dream!

Anyway, enough of the meteorological report and onto the golf. As usual on the winter trip, it was a fourball-betterball with everyone chucking-in a couple of quid with prizes for the top three pairs. The nearest the pins were won by: Steve Lloyd (5th), Terry Tomkiss (7th), Kevin Morris (11th) and controversially, Peter Meaney at the 16th. Peter was one of the 'fairweathers' who came out for a bit of practice but popped his tee shot closest on the 16th to deny Adrian Marchant the prize, despite Peter not being in the competition. The longest drive was won by Steve Lloyd, maybe not the longest hit of the day but it was on the fairway (and no, I didn't use my 3 iron John Shaw you cheeky t**t).

Third place went to Graham Thorpe and Jamie Moore on 36 points who had a side-bet in their group with Steve Lloyd and Steve Barkshire, a tight game with plenty of banter in which Graham and Jamie never got the honour once during the 18 holes but only finished two points behind. Second place went to Kevin Morris and Dave Jones on 37 points and winning were Lloyd and Barkshire on 38 points.

A few pints at the golf club and it was off to The Inn at Woodhall Spa where the beers were flowing well from late afternoon and it was some relief to have the meal at 7pm to soak-up some of the alcohol. The meal portions may not have been the largest, but the food quality matched the rest of the hotel in that it was excellent. After dinner, a few headed out into Woodhall Spa but the majority remained in the hotel bar for the rest of the evening. By 9pm, the biggest surpirise of the day was that John Mansell was still awake despite sharing the best part of 5 bottles of wine with Martyn Dodwell. It didn't take long for normal service to be resumed however, and soon John was visited by the Sandman and the snoring commenced. We were concerned about the buttons on John's shirt as the pressure of his ample belly was stretching them to the limit. It was decided to relieve the 'pressure' by undoing one or two. This quickly turned into a new version of Kerplunk, where you had to undo a button without waking the slumbering beast. Luckily the game ended before they started on his trousers.

The weather forecast for the morning was for thick fog so there was some concern as to whether we'd be playing but it was a pleasant surpirise to wake-up with just some light mist and dry relatively mild conditions.I know I've said this before, but the Hotchkin course really is something special with heather, gorse and insanely deep bunkers protecting the course. It was in superb condition with hardly any sign of the previous day's heavy rain and it was a pleasure to play there again. Many of the tees were 'forward' but the ground was wet so there wasn't a huge amount of run, so the course still played long for most players.

Nearest the pins were won by Kevin Morris (5th), Shaun Mullaney (8th) and Gordon Galloway (12th), with Kevin Morris taking the longest drive at the 18th, judged to perfection as his drive finished just two yards before the fairway ran-out.

Before we get onto the prize winners, a special mention for Marcho who had a tough front nine with just ten points but started the back nine strongly with a par for 3 points. A run of 8 consecutive blobs ensued however and Marcho had to console himself with a number of pints and watching Wales' narrow victory over Fiji in the 'egg chasing'.

Fifth place went to Howard Holliday who was as steady as ever off his handicap of 5 to score 33 points. One ahead was Shaun Mullaney, playing his home course also off a handicap of 5. Shaun came 'under radar' almost in his group as none of us thought he was doing particularly well, but he was just racking up the pars with the odd bogey, and 'won the group' with his 34 points.

Gary Tyler, winner of the 2014 Cliff Thompson Salver
Gary Tyler, winner of the 2014 Cliff Thompson Salver

Jamie Moore had played well on the Friday and continued his good form into Saturday scoring 35 points off a handicap of 17 for third place. Alan Tolley has been known as the societies perennial bridesmaid having finished second on numerous occasions without a win. There may be a new member after that title however. He's only been a member for just over 12 months but Kevin Morris had finished in the top four on no less that four occasions and he was at it again at Woodhall Spa. Playing off 4, Kev played the opening 10 holes in level par but a three hole run of bogey, bogey, blob seemed to have ruined his chances. He re-grouped and played the final 5 holes in one under for a 36 point total but that was only good enough for second.

Having won the final event of the 2014 season at Birstall Golf Club, Gary Tyler thought he'd start the new season in similar style by scoring a whopping 39 points over a very demanding golf course of his handicap of 14 to take this season's Cliff Thompson Trophy in style. Too many more wins like this Gary and the handicap review committee will have to schedule a meeting! Well played.

After the meal, Vice Captain Mark Johnson did the prize giving in Alan Tolley's absence and everyone headed home after yet another successful winter trip. Let's look forward to Hesketh and Formby in 2015.
