Society History

How the Society started

The society started in 1992 under the name of The Shoulder of Mutton Golf Society which was run by the landlord of the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Barton under Needwood. When the landlord move onto pastures new in 1994, the organisation was taken over by a number of regular members who decided to change the name and officially register the society with the English Golf Union, the governing body for amateur golf in England.

Membership of the EGU gave the society the opportunity to play at over 1,800 affiliated golf clubs. Members of the society also had the opportunity to become associate members of the English Golf Union, enabling them to obtain a handicap as tangible recognition of their ability and to enable inter-play and competition.

The EGU no longer administer the associate golf society membership scheme unfortunately.

The society has grown over the years and we're currently one ofthe largest societies in The Midlands and expect to take between 30 and 45 players to each of our events.
